Wales manager Chris Coleman has described the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gareth Bale as the best player in Britain, claiming that he would not swap Bale for any player from the rest of the home nations, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Gareth Bale scoring against Scotland

The Mirror adds that Bale has scored all of Wales’ last five goals in World Cup qualifiers, including a brace in Friday’s vital home win over Scotland that brought about Coleman’s first victory as an international manager.

Coleman was at pains to stress that Wales are not overly reliant on Bale, insisting there were a number of vital performers in the victory over Scotland, but added that in Bale Wales have a player of rare ability and great importance.

The manager said: “I wouldn’t swap him for anyone else, to be fair. Anyone can see - when he’s got the ball he’s devastating. He’s a terrific player. His work-rate is excellent, he comes away with Wales and plays with passion and incredible ability.

He’s scored all our goals (in this campaign) so far and I know people are talking about him. He’s a show-stopper and people pay money to come and watch him play.

Wales meet Croatia in Osijek on Tuesday having moved to fourth place in Group A thanks to their late win against Scotland. Croatia are second in the table, level on points with leaders Belgium but behind in the rankings because of a poorer goal difference.
