Jack Wilshere will continue his slow return to the Arsenal first team by taking part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Chelsea organised by Arsene Wenger, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The match is due to take place at the Arsenal training ground in Hertfordshire on Wednesday and will be Wilshere’s third taste of football since returning to training. The England international has previously played two games in the U-21 Premier League, first against West Bromwich Albion and then Premier League new boys Reading.

Wilshere has not played competitive football in 14 months after a serious ankle injury was followed be a series of niggling problems, including an operation on a knee injury over the summer.

The 20-year-old’s last contribution to competitive football came for England, in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland in June 2011. Wilshere played the full 90 minutes as an England side manager by Fabio Capello drew 2-2 with their Swiss opponents. For Arsenal, Wilshere’s last involvement also came in a 2-2 draw, in late May 2011, against Fulham.
