Liverpool are ready to give Daniel Sturridge a way out of the Chelsea shadows by making an initial loan move for the England international in January, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, is said to have pushed aside the notion that Liverpool could bid £20m for Sturridge when the January transfer window opens, but the Reds boss is thought to be keen on a move for the 23-year-old with the proviso that Sturridge goes to Anfield on loan first.

The newspaper adds that Chelsea could be open to the idea if a guaranteed fee can be agreed between the clubs, particularly as Sturridge will enter the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge next summer, with his transfer market value dropping accordingly.

Sturridge is understood to be eager to leave Chelsea after seeing his playing time under Roberto Di Matteo dramatically reduced, with only two substitute appearances in the Premier League coming Sturridge’s way so far this season.

Liverpool are known to be in the market for a striker after the summer transfer window closed with Rodgers’ options reduced in that position, with Sturridge a target late in August only for the move to break down.
