Allardyce lauds loan addition of Carroll

Sam Allardyce has praised the signing of Andy Carroll on a season-long loan from Liverpool and believes West Ham will benefit hugely this season from the striker’s presence. The England international was frozen out of the scene at Anfield and moved to Upton Park on transfer deadline day in the summer window.

Carroll suffered a hamstring injury on his debut and has been out of action for a few weeks, but returned before the international break and looked back to the player he was before the move to Liverpool. West Ham, in Allardyce’s eyes, have pulled off a major coup to sign the 23 year old and is looking forward to working closely with Carroll now he has returned from injury.

Allardyce said: “I think Andy was a big, big, big signing for us. I think the size of the player, not just in stature terms, but in terms of ability, was one where every player that was already at West Ham thought ‘wow’. We’ve really got someone we can build from and I think that, coupled with Matt Jarvis and Yossi Benayoun, made the squad real secure in terms of strength and depth”.

The Hammers travel to Southampton this weekend and Carroll is expected to lead the line, having not been involved in the international frame for England’s two World Cup qualifiers against Poland and San Marino. Liverpool are short of strikers, but Carroll looks set to stay at West Ham, something which Allardyce has welcomed with open arms.
