Reading sack made me a better manager, insists Liverpool boss Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers believes being sacked by Reading made him into a better manager, the Daily Telegraph has reported, as the Liverpool boss prepares to meet his former employers in the Premier League on Saturday.
Rodgers spent only six months in charge in Berkshire, having been appointed in June 2009 to replace Steve Coppell after the former Manchester United winger resigned at the end of the season, and being relieved of his duties in December 2009 with Reading recording just five league wins under Rodgers and languishing one place clear of the Championship relegation zone.
Brian McDermott was called in to replace Rodgers, having previously been the club’s reserve team manager, and eventually guided the Royals to a return to the Premier League last season. Rodgers, meanwhile, landed at Swansea City and took the Welsh club to the top flight as well, leaving for Liverpool this summer.
Rodgers said: “Before the experience at Reading, I would never have said that a manager needed to experience that low, but when I did and had that six months of reflection there was absolutely no question in my mind it made me better.”
He added: “I remember a number of senior managers at the time saying to me ‘welcome to being a manager’ and I couldn’t believe it. I was so disappointed. But now I see what they mean. It makes you hope to never be in that position again.”
