Mancini welcomes arrogance of Man City goalkeeper Hart

Saturday 20 October 2012

Roberto Mancini has denied the perceived arrogance of Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart is a problem, with the manager insisting quite the opposite according to the Daily Telegraph.

Joe Hart

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, now working as a television pundit, questioned Hart’s attitude after he made an error that led to Poland’s equalising goal during England’s 1-1 draw with the Euro 2012 co-hosts in a midweek World Cup qualification game, but Mancini has come to the defence of his charge.

Mancini however did not deny that there was an arrogance to Hart’s game, but rather claimed that it was both necessary and common in a player of Hart’s ability, particularly in as specialist a position as that of the goalkeeper.

The manager said: “Every keeper is like this. It is important because it’s different to other positions. If you want to be a keeper, you should be cocky. Joe is a good guy, he works very hard, he wants to improve.

It is my opinion that Joe is the best keeper in England and one of the best in Europe. Sometimes a keeper can make a mistake but this is normal. If you want to be a good keeper, you should be cocky sometimes.

Hart has made 26 appearances for England since his debut in 2008, establishing himself as the county’s first-choice goalkeeper and helping Manchester City to win their first league title in more than 40 years last season.
