Alan Pardew has praised the performance of Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland by comparing the Argentinean to England’s World Cup-winning captain, West Ham United icon Bobby Moore, the BBC has reported.

Pardew, a former West Ham manager, claimed Coloccini was “immense” against the Black Cats, with the BBC pointing out that Sunderland only scored once Coloccini, only recently returned from injury, had been replaced by Steven Taylor.

Yohan Cabaye gave Newcastle an early lead with his first goal of the season but the Magpies’ advantage became precarious once Cheick Tiote was sent off for a challenge on Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher that was both high and late.

The 10 men of Newcastle held on to their slender lead for almost an hour but were eventually ground down by the attacks of Martin O’Neill’s men, Demba Ba unable to prevent the ball striking him and beating his own goalkeeper Tim Krul in the 86th minute.

Coloccini had been off the field for around seven minutes when Newcastle’s back line was breached, while after the game Pardew said of Coloccini’s performance: “I come from a famous club at West Ham United after being manager there, and that was like watching Bobby Moore. It was that good.
