Arsenal could launch a summer transfer swoop for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema as the Spanish champions join the race to sign Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao, the Metro has reported.

If Madrid are successful in prising Falcao away from their local rivals then Benzema could be made available, deemed surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu. If Jose Mourinho does sanction the departure of Benzema then it is not expected the France international will be available on the cheap, but at only 24, the newspaper suggests Arsene Wenger would look past the price tag and focus on the long-term benefits of signing the prolific striker.

Benzema has scored 70 goals in 145 games for Madrid and last season hit 32 in 52 games, including 21 in the league, the first time in four years Benzema has reached the 20-goal mark. Last season was the most successful in terms of goals in the career of Benzema, surpassing the 31 in 52 games he managed for Lyon in 2007-08.
