Brad Friedel has dismissed suggestions of discord between himself and Hugo Lloris, his competitor for the spot as Tottenham Hotspur’s first choice goalkeeper, insisting that the rivalry between the pair is healthy, according to the Independent.

Friedel, speaking to Sports Illustrated, revealed that he was fully aware Spurs were seeking a long-term replacement for him and have been doing so for more than a year, with the former United States international adding that he believes the club were surprised by his ability to keep playing past his 40th birthday. Friedel turned 41 in May.

The former Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa custodian added that he has no problem with the policy of rotation Andre Villas-Boas has occasionally employed, stressing that no player has a guaranteed right to play, and that he bears no grudges after Villas-Boas brought an end to Friedel’s run of more than 300 consecutive league appearances when selecting Lloris to play against Aston Villa earlier in October.

Friedel said: “The media wanted to make out that it was this big fight between Hugo and myself and the manager, but there was never a big fight. The fact is Tottenham have been looking for the last year and a half for a long-term No. 1 goalkeeper.

I don't think they envisioned what my fitness levels would be at this age and I sort of surprised myself. So we have a competition now. It's healthy, but there's a competition. It's friendly.
