Wenger admits Arsenal are under pressure

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal are under increasing pressure to win a trophy for the first time since 2005, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The Gunners find themselves 10 points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea even at this relatively early stage of the season, with their chances of progression in the Champions League largely resting on the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting with Bundesliga side Schalke at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are currently top of Group B, two points clear of their midweek opponents, but would fall behind Schalke if they were to lose the first meeting between the sides. Arsenal would then need to beat Schalke at their own Gelsenkirchen ground in the next round of fixtures.

Wenger’s side had started the Premier League season well but inconsistent results have seen them fall by the wayside. Having drawn away to champions Manchester City, Arsenal later lost at home to Chelsea and this past weekend lost to Norwich City, who were previously without a league win this season.

The manager however feels his team will be in contention for silverware come the end of the season. Wenger added however that results such as that against Norwich make matters more difficult for everyone at the club. He said: “For us, it’s not just the number of points, it is that the margin of error we have now in front of us is very limited. And with a result like that we put a huge pressure on our shoulders.
