Willian at the centre of transfer tug-of-war between Chelsea and Tottenham

Thursday 25 October 2012

Willian has confirmed he wants to leave Shakhtar Donetsk in the near future, with the Premier League his most likely destination, but the identity of his new employers is less clear as both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on the Brazil international according to the Daily Telegraph.

Willian challenges David Luiz

The newspaper adds that Shakhtar would demand a transfer fee of around £25m but the player himself is so eager to play in England that he would be willing to help any more along by taking a significant cut in his wages.

Chelsea tried to sign Willian in both summer 2011 and 2012 but Shakhtar would not countenance a sale, while Tottenham also failed this summer with a bid of just under £12m. But both clubs are expected to return to the player when the January transfer window opens, sparking a battle between Andre Villas-Boas and his former assistant at Chelsea, Roberto Di Matteo.

Willian starred on Tuesday evening as Shakhtar put Chelsea to the sword in Ukraine, running out 2-1 winners to threaten the holders’ progression to the next round of the Champions League.
