Cech believes Shakhtar defeat can help Chelsea against Man Utd

Petr Cech has claimed that the defeat Chelsea suffered at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League may be what Roberto Di Matteo’s side needed to keep their Premier League title challenge on track ahead of the visit of Manchester United to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Chelsea lost 2-1 in Ukraine on Tuesday and face the prospect of becoming the first holders of the Champions League to exit the competition in the group stage if they do not turn around their results. Di Matteo’s side are currently second in Group E, only a point ahead of Juventus with a trip to Turin still to come in mid-November.

Before then Chelsea meet Man Utd on Sunday in a top of the table league clash. Chelsea are four points ahead of both United and Manchester City, and could turn that lead into a commanding seven points by the end of play - or it could be down to a single point if United prevail.

Cech however believes the loss in Ukraine could prove to be the jolt to the system Chelsea need. The goalkeeper, who will captain Chelsea against United if Frank Lampard is not passed fit, said: “If you take it in perspective, it is good that this happened now because Manchester United is a similar team, who play on the counter-attack away from home. We will play more or less the same kind of side as Shakhtar. So, hopefully, this will serve as a lesson for the weekend.
