Wenger puts priority on Champions League qualification for Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has insisted Arsenal are right to value finishing fourth in the Premier League and thus qualifying for the Champions League over winning a minor trophy such as the League Cup, ESPN has reported.

The Gunners’ Annual General Meeting was marked by complaints from supporters and shareholders who are unhappy Arsenal have not won a trophy since 2005 despite appearing to be in a strong financial position.

Arsenal’s last piece of silverware came after beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final on penalties following a 0-0 draw. Patrick Vieira scored the winning spot-kick.

Wenger however insisted that there are five trophies for which to compete rather than the usually-regarded four, with the manager placing qualification for the Champions League ahead of winning both the FA Cup and the League Cup, but behind the Premier League and the Champions League itself.

Senior members of the club’s board, including Ivan Gazidis, Stan Kroenke and Peter Hill-Wood, were heckled at the AGM but Wenger defended the club’s record in the past seven years. He said: “You ask any club in the world, do you want to win the League Cup or be in the Champions League next season? And they will all give you the same answer.
