Frank Lampard has been ruled out of Chelsea’s top of the Premier League table meeting with Manchester United on Sunday, the Daily Mail has reported.

Frank Lampard

Manager Roberto Di Matteo confirmed he would be without the experienced England international for the match after Lampard was withdrawn early in Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek. The midfielder is suffering from a calf strain, having missed England’s recent international fixtures with the same problem.

As well as the impending league fixture Lampard is expected to miss the League Cup match against United, next weekend’s league game against Swansea City and the return leg with Shakhtar at Stamford Bridge. With John Terry suspended for all of those games bar the Champions League match, goalkeeper Petr Cech is likely to captain the side.

Chelsea go into the United match with a four-point advantage at the top of the table, while United are level on points with near neighbours Manchester City. Chelsea are also yet to lose in the league this season.
