Chelsea to investigate steward injury in Man Utd defeat
Chelsea will look into how a steward was hurt during the 3-2 Premier League defeat to Manchester United on Sunday after claims the staff member was injured by objects thrown from the crowd, the BBC has reported.
The incident occurred around the time Javier Hernandez scored what proved to be the winning goal for United, with the BBC adding that the Mexico striker appeared to be targeted by objects thrown from the Matthew Harding Stand as he celebrated.
Shortly after, a steward required 10 minutes of attention while pitchside and was later taken to hospital. A Chelsea spokesman said: “We are investigating all the incidents around that time. We are looking at reports of objects that may have been thrown or incidents around the steward taking a fall. My information so far is that he slipped and fell, may have hurt his knee, and was being treated by the side of the pitch.”
The match itself was dogged by controversy both during the play and in the aftermath. The Hernandez goal was later shown to have been scored despite the striker being in an offside position when the ball was played to him, while Chelsea saw two players sent off, right-back Branislav Ivanovic and striker Fernando Torres. Torres was shown a second yellow card after being adjudged to have dived, while Ivanovic received a straight red for bringing down Ashley Young.
Referee Mark Clattenburg was also at the centre of a storm after Chelsea alleged the official used inappropriate language towards two of their players in the course of the match.
