The England international was stretchered off during his side’s tight 1-0 league win over Swansea on Saturday having only just returned from a long period on the sidelines with an ankle problem.

According to Goal.com, City physios were relieved not to find cruciate ligament damage but the right-back still had to undergo surgery for damaging the miscus cartilage of his right knee.

Richards made 29 league appearances last season as City were crowned champions but towards the latter end of the season was seen to lose his place in the side to Argentine Pablo Zabaleta, while further competition arrived in the summer courtesy of Brazil international defender Maicon from Inter Milan.

Having been eliminated from the League Cup already, Roberto Mancini is currently preparing his side for a trip to Upton Park to face Sam Allardyce’s West Ham for Saturday’s early-evening kick-off.
