Rodgers blames Liverpool cup defeat on squad depth

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that his side’s 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Swansea in the League Cup fourth round was an indication of the paucity of squad numbers available to him at Anfield.

Liverpool were outplayed throughout by Michael Laudrup’s Welsh outfit and goals from Chico, Nathan Dyer and Jonathan De Guzman ensured that Rodgers’ first encounter with the team he left for the Anfield hotseat in the summer ended in defeat.

Speaking to the BBC, although Rodgers praised his former club’s performance, he believed it highlighted the work that needed to be done at Anfield.

“We have a very, very small squad. A very thin squad,” said Rodgers.

“With three competitions, I have rotated, looked at young players and looked at fringe players. That was a lesson for me in terms of where we are at. I have given players the opportunity to come in and shine and that is all you can do as a coahc and a manager. It then becomes quite easy for me, but the problem is then that your squad is even thinner.”

Liverpool have struggled for home form under Rodgers so far this season with only three wins throughout the campaign, two in the Europa League and only once in the Premier League and were expected to challenge in the latter stages of the League Cup as holders of the competition.

The next visitors to Anfield are in-form Newcastle on Sunday as the Magpies look to increase their lead over the hosts in the table to six points.
