Suarez racism row not why I was sacked, insists ex-Liverpool boss Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish has rejected the suggestion that he was sacked as Liverpool manager because of his unwavering support for Luis Suarez during the striker’s racism row with Manchester United defender Patrice Evra, the Guardian has reported.

Dalglish added that responsibility for the club’s handling of the Suarez case, which saw the Uruguayan banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing Evra, lay with the club’s senior management figures, rather than the manager of the football team.

He said: “I think anything that is not done in a positive manner cannot help you but I was only the manager. There are other people with greater intelligence than me and greater responsibilities than me when it comes to something like this.

Dalglish was criticised for wearing a t-shirt bearing Suarez’s image shortly after the striker was charged by the Football Association for his comments towards Evra, but the Scot insists that the decision to wear the t-shirts was one taken by the team as a whole, as the players wanted to illustrate their support for their teammate.

Stressing that the garments were not worn at his insistence, Dalglish conceded that the wearing of the Suarez shirts may not have been the right move, and added that if he was involved in a similar situation again, Dalglish would choose his words more carefully when giving his side of the story.

Dalglish was sacked in June after around a year-and-a-half as manager, to make way for Brendan Rodgers. In his second spell at the club Dalglish won the League Cup and took the team to the FA Cup final, where they lost to Chelsea.
