Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has criticised the way in which Chelsea have handled the allegations made by John Obi Mikel against referee Mark Clattenburg, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Wenger derided what he sees as Chelsea’s decision to make the allegations against Clattenburg public despite at the time having little evidence to back up the claim. The original allegations from Chelsea also included a claim of a similar nature by Juan Mata which was later dropped after an internal investigation.

The Football Association are now investigating the allegation themselves, while the Metropolitan Police are also looking into the matter after a complaint from a member of the public. The Telegraph notes that the officials who also took part in the Chelsea vs. Manchester United fixture were the incident is alleged to have taken place are expected to support Clattenburg, who denies the allegation.

Wenger added that, in his opinion, when there is a dispute between referee and player or club, it is better to settle matters quietly rather than in the public arena. He continued: “I’m not a great believer in making these stories public. One of the great things in sports is tolerance, forgiveness and explanation internally and I think it should stay like that. It can happen that a referee doesn’t behave well. I do not say they are angels, but it is always better to sort it out in the room.
