Andre Villas-Boas is eager to re-unite former Ajax teammates Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld at Tottenham Hotspur by bringing the latter player to White Hart Lane from the Dutch champions, the Daily Mail has reported.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld formed the centre-back partnership last season as Frank de Boer led Ajax to the title, and are also colleagues in the Belgium national team. There they are joined by a third Spurs player, Moussa Dembele, as well as a number of Premier League stars including Marouane Fellaini, Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany.

A fee of £8m is expected to be needed to take Alderweireld from Amsterdam, and Tottenham are also likely to face competition for the player’s signature from across Europe. The Mail claims as many as 15 clubs are interested in signing the highly-rated 23-year-old.

Villas-Boas is understood to be keen to bring Alderweireld to Tottenham in an effort to replace the ageing William Gallas and the out of favour Michael Dawson, neither of whom are expected to have a long-term future under the Portuguese.

Alderweireld has spent the entirety of his senior career at Ajax, having played in his native Belgium for Germinal Beerschot as a youngster. To date, Alderweireld has made more than 100 appearances for Ajax, winning two Dutch titles, a Dutch Cup and almost 20 international caps.
