Roberto Mancini had lined up a move to Monaco in case he failed to win the Premier League and was sacked by Manchester City, the Daily Mirror has reported.

In the end Mancini did not need his safe-haven in the principality as a late Sergio Aguero goal against Queens Park Rangers gave City the title ahead of Manchester United on goal difference, with the sides finishing level on points at the top of the table.

But it has now been revealed that Mancini engaged in detailed talks with Monaco over becoming their new manager in the event his contract was terminated at the Etihad Stadium. In talks that ran for three months at the tail end of last season, it is claimed Mancini and his representatives agreed a package that would see the Italian earn £32m tax-free over five years.

Monaco are backed by a Russian billionaire and were prepared to make Mancini one of the highest-paid managers in the world, in the same category as Carlo Ancelotti at Paris Saint-Germain and Guus Hiddink at Anzhi Makhachkala, the Mirror adds.

In the end, after taking City to their first title victory in more than 40 years, Mancini signed a new contract with the newly-crowned champions, paying him more than Monaco were offering - £7m a year for the next five years.
