Liverpool are reportedly closing in on Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to beef up his side’s striking options.

Huntelaar celebrates a Schalke goal

Rodgers’ has been forced to hugely rely on Luis Suarez after Dirk Kuyt, Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll were allowed to leave in the summer without proper replacements being found, before new signing Fabio Borini picked up a foot injury that could sideline him until the new year.

However, the Daily Mirror reports that Netherlands international Huntelaar could be set to make the move to Anfield for a cut-price fee in January, after the Dutchman elected to run down his contract, which expires in the summer, at the Bundesliga club.

Huntelaar scored 48 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions last season, as well as claiming six in 12 so far this campaign, one of which came against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the side’s last Champions League meeting.
