Liverpool to rest Suarez and Gerrard for Europa League trip to Anzhi

Liverpool are set to leave both Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard at home as Brendan Rodgers attempts to prepare his side for the trip to Moscow to face big-spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala.

Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez

Both Suarez and Gerrard have played limited roles in the Merseysiders’ European campaign this season, although Suarez did start the Anfield clash between the two sides in which Liverpool were victorious thanks to a long-range strike from Stewart Downing.

However, according to the Liverpool Daily Post, neither player will be risked.

Rodgers is reliant on the key duo - particularly Suarez, who helped rescue a point for the Reds against Newcastle on the weekend with his fifth goal in five league games - to help reignite what is in danger of becoming a flagging season for the Anfield club.

The match on Thursday will be played in Moscow due to UEFA’s reluctance for matches to be played in Anzhi’s native Dagestan region due to security and safety concerns.

Victory for Liverpool against a side that could contain the likes of Samuel Eto’o and Yuri Zhirkov would go some way to securing qualification from Group A into the knockout stages of the competition.
