Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are set to clash over the signing of prolific Dutch forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Bundesliga club Schalke.

Liverpool have been desperate to increase their striking options under Brendan Rodgers with Luis Suarez their only fit senior first team forward, while Spurs are also light in the attacking department at present, with Andre Villas-Boas only having Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor to choose from.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are ahead of Spurs in the chase for Huntelaar, who is available in January for a cut-price fee as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season. Thus far, Huntelaar has shown no sign of wanting to extend his stay at the Veltins Arena.

The 29-year-old has 34 goals in 59 appearances for the Netherlands international side and has scored twice for Schalke against Arsenal in the Champions League this season.
