Roberto Mancini is to ask Txiki Begiristain to bring Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi to Manchester City when the January transfer window opens in an effort to bolster the current Premier League champions’ defence of their title, the Daily Mail has reported.

Daniel De Rossi

City chased De Rossi throughout the summer window but the Italy international chose to stay with hometown club Roma but it is understood his position has changed, with the 29-year-old now much more open to leaving the club he has played for throughout his career. A fee of around £20m would still be required to prise De Rossi away from the Stadio Olimpico, along with wages of around £100,000 per week, the Mail adds.

Mancini are Begiristain met for the first time following City’s 2-2 draw with Ajax on Tuesday, a result that leaves the Etihad Stadium side facing an uphill battle to qualify for the next round of the Champions League. The presence of Begiristain, formerly of Barcelona and a close ally of Pep Guardiola, has led to speculation Mancini could be dumped in favour of the out of work Guardiola, who is currently on sabbatical in New York.
