Podolski wants Wenger to give him central berth at Arsenal

Lukas Podolski has echoed comments made by Theo Walcott recently and asked Arsene Wenger to be entrusted with playing as Arsenal’s lone centre-forward, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Like Walcott, Podolski has most often been used as a winger in Arsenal’s version of a 4-3-3 formation, but the Germany international feels that position is not getting the best out of him since his summer move from Koln.

Podolski was selected as a central striker for the opening game of the season against Sunderland, a match which finished goalless, but since then has been deployed on the left of the attack with licence to drift centrally, a similar role to the one which he takes for his national team.

Wenger has generally preferred either Gervinho or Olivier Giroud in the striker’s berth so far this season but the former is currently out injured while the latter has struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, although Giroud was on the score sheet in midweek against Schalke in the Champions League.

Podolski however is clear on what he feels is his best position. He said: “I’d rather play centrally up front. On the left I have to do a lot of defensive work, constantly running up and down. I am not a classical winger.
