Torres warns Chelsea must improve after last-gasp Champions League win

Thursday 08 November 2012

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has tempered some of the joy from his side’s last-minute 3-2 Champions League over Shakhtar Donetsk by admitting that the reigning European champions must improve if they are have a chance of retaining their trophy and winning the Premier League.

Torres scores against Shakhtar

Victor Moses grabbed a last-gasp winner for the Blues to deny an impressive Shakhtar side that had twice levelled through Brazil international Willian after goalkeeping mistakes from Andriy Pyatov had led to goals from Torres - his first in four matches - and Oscar.

However, according to the Daily Telegraph, Torres believes that Chelsea must not rest on their laurels despite their escape with three points to leave them in a good position to qualify from Group E.

I’m happy with the result but we know we must do much better,” said the Spain international, who was awarded the Euro 2012 Golden Boot before the game.

We know we have to improve. We have been creating problems for them, pressing and creating chances from their mistakes, but not when we have the ball like we’re used to. This kind of situation cannot happen again because, especially in the Champions League, at times like these you can be out.

Had Roberto Di Matteo’s men failed to win they would have faced the prospect of potentially needing a win over Italian giants Juventus in Turin to ensure qualification from Group E.
