Roy Hodgson has named his England squad to play Sweden next week, with the manager picking Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere alongside captain Steven Gerrard, who is set to win his 100th cap, and Everton’s Leon Osman, poised to make his debut at the age of 31, according to the BBC.

Jack Wilshere

Wilshere’s inclusion could prove controversial as Arsene Wenger had previously asked that the 20-year-old, who spent nearly 18 months on the injury list, not be considered for international duty yet. Hodgson has however included Wilshere, who has made three appearances for his club this season and was sent off against Manchester United in his last league appearance.

Gerrard is in line to become only the sixth player to reach a century of England caps if he plays against Sweden. The Liverpool skipper will join Peter Shilton, David Beckham, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright in the 100 club. Ashley Cole, who has 99 caps to his name, misses out on the squad due to an ankle injury.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from Gerrard is Osman, the Everton academy graduate who has never made an international squad before. But the midfielder has been rewarded for his excellent recent form with a place in Hodgson’s travelling party, while Raheem Sterling could also make his senior England bow at age of 17.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Tottenham), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham)

Midfielders: Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Leon Osman (Everton), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Manchester United)

Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United)
