McLeish - Rangers should target promotion

Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish has commented on the saga involving the club, insisting that Ally McCoist should merely focus on promotion and take little steps to revive the fallen giant.

Rangers are now plying their trade in the Scottish Third Division after their insolvency and administration resulted in their demotion from the Scottish Premier League.

McLeish won two SPL titles in a five year spell with Rangers from the beginning until mid-2000s and is disappointed at what has happened to the club. The 53 year old has admitted that he hopes Rangers can win the league this season and start to build themselves back into the SPL after what has been a torrid couple of years off the field. McLeish praised the work of McCoist and although McLeish believes the club ‘have lost a lot of quality’, they have enough to get promoted.

“For me, Rangers should have no other target this season other than getting promoted. Of course, it would be nice to see them win a trophy as well, but I think that the biggest priority for Rangers is to get promotion. It is a shame that such a massive club and institution like Rangers are in the position that they are in”, the Scotsman said.

McLeish was also heavily impressed with the show of strength from Rangers fans, who committed to 45,000 season tickets before the season began. As far as the SPL season goes, McLeish cannot see past Rangers’ arch-rivals Celtic winning the SPL again. He said: “I believe Celtic will be too strong, because of their resources and the quality that they have, but the league has surprised everyone”.
