Ferguson calls for Man Utd to hit 100 goals this season

Sir Alex Ferguson wants to see his Manchester United side reach three figures in the Premier League’s goals for column this season, the Guardian has reported, with the manager believing his potent strike force is already on course for that amount.

United have already netted 26 goals in 10 games, with the goals spread around 13 different players and Robin van Persie leading the way with eight. United’s current ratio of 2.6 goals a game would, over a 38-game season, leave Ferguson a little disappointed. A ratio of 2.6 goals a game for 38 games is only 98.8, short of the manager’s target.

Ferguson nevertheless hailed the goals in his team thus far, pointing to the record in all competitions of 15 different names on the score sheet, with the likes of defenders Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra chipping in with a couple of rare strikes.

But it was the more usual goal scorers that Ferguson admitted he is looking to most of all, praising the impact of summer signing van Persie, backing Wayne Rooney to score 20 goals this season and commending Javier Hernandez for returning to the sort of form he displayed in his first season at Old Trafford.

Ferguson said: “It would be nice to think we could [reach 100 goals]. The satisfying thing for me is the goals around the team. But we will take them from anyone. As long as the strikers are scoring and we [are] winning matches.
