Premier League TV rights to go over £5bn mark

Premier League television rights have spiked in price once more, this time topping the £5bn mark for the first time once the final foreign rights are added to the domestic revenue.

Earlier this year, Sky and BT announced a £3.018bn domestic TV contract for the United Kingdom with a further few hundred million added on top for various highlights packages.

According to the Guardian, with the overseas contracts set to be far greater than the current £1.4bn the Premier League earns, total revenue is expected to exceed £5bn and ensure that from the 2013-14 season, Premier League clubs will be awarded more TV money than ever before.

The news will be welcomed by clubs currently struggling to make ends meet in terms of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play programme, which stipulates that clubs must not grossly spend in excess of their earnings through legitimate means.
