Zaha may switch allegiance to Ivory Coast despite place in England squad

Despite being rewarded for his fine form with Crystal Palace this season with a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the friendly against Sweden on Wednesday, Wilfried Zaha may reportedly still commit himself to the Ivory Coast, the country of his birth.

Despite the fact that Zaha is in line to make his international debut in the Stockholm friendly, under FIFA rules players are allowed to switch allegiances if their only appearances have come in “non-competitive” internationals, a rule that has seen many players switch from the Republic of Ireland to their Northern counterparts and vice-versa in recent years.

Indeed, according to the Daily Mirror, Zaha has candidly admitted he remains in two minds on the situation, with the lure of competitive tournament football in the form of January’s Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon.

I was born in the Ivory Coast but all I know is England,” said Zaha.

It’s 50-50 at the moment. Didier Drogba called me and I was shocked, to be honest. He’s a humble guy. I’ve been with England Under-21s and now and I will have to make a decision.

England do not play a competitive fixture until their next World Cup qualifier against San Marino on March 12, a full two months after the opening of the biennial African tournament.
