The gap between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur is closing all the time, the Spurs assistant coach and former midfielder Steffen Freund has claimed ahead of the Premier League meeting between the north London rivals, according to the Daily Mail.

The Emirates Stadium is the venue for the first fixture between the sides of the season on Saturday, with Tottenham currently enjoying a one place and one point advantage over their weekend hosts. Spurs are seventh in the table with 17 points while the Gunners are eighth with 16.

While Freund rejected the suggestion that Arsenal are no longer the force they once were - at least not during his days as a Tottenham player between 1998 and 2003 - the former Germany international revealed he believes it is more a case of Spurs improving than Arsenal slipping.

Freund said: “In my time they used to be involved in the title race every year and we finished ninth or 10th. That has changed now. We are really close to our biggest rival. It would be great to finish above Arsenal.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Tottenham took a quick two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Louis Saha and Emmanuel Adebayor, only for Arsenal to hit back with five goals including a Theo Walcott brace, to kick-start their ultimately successful push to overhaul Tottenham, then third, in the table.
