Steven Gerrard has admitted to feeling butterflies in his stomach as he approaches his landmark 100th England appearance, to take place against Sweden on Wednesday evening, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Gerrard will become only the sixth player to reach a centenary in England colours, joining Billy Wright, David Beckham, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Peter Shilton, more than 12 years after his first international appearance against Ukraine in a pre-Euro 2000 friendly. His first England goal came in the 5-1 victory over Germany in a qualification match for the 2002 World Cup, a tournament Gerrard missed through injury.

Despite having appeared frequently for England in the last dozen years and standing as the team’s captain today, Gerrard revealed he was nervous at the prospect of joining the 100 club. He also dismissed suggestions he wanted to surpass the caps record for an outfield player of 115 set by David Beckham, Gerrard’s former international colleague.

He said: “I'm excited. I'm slightly nervous which I haven't been for a while. I can't wait for the game to start. I still feel I have a few chapters to write yet. I don't feel I'm at the end.

Gerrard added: “David is a hero of mine. I've always looked up to him and I enjoyed playing alongside him. But to be honest it is not important to me if I beat David's record. I just want to qualify this team for the next big tournament.
