Manchester City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov believes his side are well on course to defend their Premier League title that was won in such dramatic fashion last season.

The Citizens have had a mixed start to the new term, remaining unbeaten in the Premier League - where they currently occupy second place following their 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday, two points off leaders Manchester United - but enduring a disappointing Champions League campaign where they are yet to win after four group matches.

However, according to Sky Sports, Kolarov believes that his side’s league form bodes well for the season ahead.

I understand why we get so much criticism. Everybody wants to beat us, because we are the champions and haven’t lost any games this season,” said the Serbia international. “The smallest teams, and the biggest ones, all want to beat us and give 200% to do that.

We have lost games in the Champions League but I think we are still the best team in the Premier League and if we play the way we know how, we will be the champions. If we carry on playing with the same spirit we showed against Spurs, nobody can beat us.

Kolarov has made a positive start to the season for Roberto Mancini’s men, scoring three goals, all from set pieces, in 12 appearances in all competitions, including one in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid.
