Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris was an Arsenal target

Hugo Lloris is likely to be sitting on the bench for Tottenham Hotspur when they visit Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend, but the France international could have been starting for the hosts rather than waiting in reserve for the visitors, the Daily Mail has reported.

Hugo Lloris

Lloris has been unable to permanently dislodge Brad Friedel from the Tottenham starting line-up under Andre Villas-Boas after making his move from Lyon to Spurs late in the transfer window. Thus far Lloris has mostly been restricted to Europa League and Capital One Cup action with a smattering of Premier League football to go with it.

Villas-Boas is said to be planning for the long-term with the presence of Lloris as 41-year-old Friedel cannot go on forever, but before the former United States international calls it a day the Portuguese has to worry about Lloris growing disillusioned at playing second fiddle. The Mail claims Lloris will meet with Villas-Boas to discuss the situation once more.

Arsene Wenger was also said to be interested in bringing Lloris to the Premier League over the summer, but doubts over the player’s suitability for the rigours of English football, combined with the £16m asking price, put paid to that. Arsenal are expected however to be in the market for a goalkeeper when the transfer window opens in the New Year.
