Mourinho wants Chelsea left-back Cole at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho will attempt to engineer a reunion at Real Madrid with a player he signed for Chelsea by moving for England left-back Ashley Cole in January, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Ashley Cole

Mourinho is said to be in the market for a full-back after Marcelo returned from international duty for Brazil with a broken foot, ruling the 24-year-old out of contention for the foreseeable future. Cole has previously been linked with a January move to Paris Saint-Germain, who are managed by another former Chelsea boss, Carlo Ancelotti, as his Stamford Bridge future remains in doubt.

Cole’s contract is due to expire in the summer and he has yet to be offered a new deal by the Champions League winners, who are understood to be implementing a policy of short-term deals for players over the age of 30. That leaves the future of the 31-year-old former Arsenal player under a cloud as he considers his options.

Mourinho brought Cole to Chelsea from the Gunners in 2006, with William Gallas moving in the opposite direction. Cole has gone on to make more than 250 appearances for the Blues, winning the FA Cup and Champions League last year as well as the Premier League title under Ancelotti in 2009-10.
