Rodgers sure Sterling will sign new Liverpool contract

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is sure that Raheem Sterling will sign a new contract with the Reds in the near future.

Sterling, 17, has forced himself into the Liverpool first team this season, making 11 appearances and netting one goal. He was also called up to the England squad last week to face Sweden in an international Friendly.

Rodgers, speaking after the Merseyside club's 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the weekend, sees no reason why Sterling would look for a Liverpool exit.

"He has been given an opportunity here this season and he is thriving on it and enjoying the work," he told the official club website.

"He will tie himself to a new contract because he wants to be here and he can be a great here at this football club.

"We want him to continue to grow, and others. And why would you want to leave one of the biggest clubs in world football? So it's a no brainer."

Jamaican born Sterling started his youth football career with Queens Park Rangers at the age of 14, and was signed for Liverpool in 2012 by Rafa Benitez for a fee of £600,000, rising to £5m depending on appearances.

Liverpool's victory at the weekend brought to an end a period of five games without a victory - next up for Rodgers' side is a Europa League clash with Young Boys, at Anfield on Thursday.
