Mertesacker happy with form
Wednesday 21 November 2012
Arsenal's German international centre-back Per Mertesacker is confident he has adapted to the Premier League, after a difficult start to his Gunners career.
Mertesacker, 28, made an £8m move from Werder Bremen in the Summer of 2011, and initially struggled to recreate the form that had made him a regular Germany international.
But this season Mertesacker has featured in all but one of Arsenal's league matches, helping the Gunners to one of the best defensive records in the Premier League, conceding just 13 goals.
“I had a very difficult first season," he told the Daily Star. "With all the settling in and the new things at Arsenal. It was quite tough, but now I feel much more comfortable with the situation, with the season, with opponents, with our team as well, with the game we play."
Despite the positive league record defensively, manager Arsene Wenger will be concerned that his side have conceded 14 in their last five outings.
Arsenal go into the fifth game of their Champions League Group B campaign tonight, when they host Montpellier at the Emirates Stadium. A win for the Gunners would see them all but qualified for the knock-out stages, with a remaining tie away to Olympiakos still to play.
