Can Benitez win over Chelsea fans after loss of a legend?

The events over the past 24 hours at Chelsea Football Club have taken many by surprise. Maybe it shouldn't for their fans though, who must be getting used to the approach of owner Roman Abramovich - we asked Blues supporters blog Chelsea Daft for their views on the latest goings on at Stamford Bridge.

Roberto Di Matteo

Waking up to the news that Roberto Di Matteo had been sacked by Chelsea was a shock to say the least. Six months after winning the Champions League and delivering the trophy Roman Abramovich wanted, Di Matteo was told his services are no longer required. It's the harsh reality of football these days and although it's tough on the hearts of Chelsea fans, we cannot comprehend elimination from Champions League to Europa League this season.

Chelsea plan their financial year around participation in the Champions League and it comes as no surprise that Chelsea have taken drastic action once again less than a year after Andre Villas-Boas suffered the same consequence.

Roberto Di Matteo was a Chelsea Legend before he took over and if anything has done even more to enhance his status with Chelsea fans, so to see him go is tough to take - the thought of Rafa Benitez taking over by this time tomorrow will make things even worse as far as the fans are concerned.

It's no secret that Di Matteo's biggest problem of late is our defence leaking goals galore and it's been quite notable. Chelsea have the attacking flair moving forward with the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar but what's the point if you cannot defend and keep clean sheets?

A run of disappointing results in recent weeks has played it's part. A disappointing draw at QPR, a home defeat up against it against United, a draw away at Swansea, an away defeat to Shakhtar, a home draw against Liverpool, an away defeat at West Brom followed by the defeat last night against Juventus has prompted Roman and Chelsea to take action.

The board has seen Chelsea peak in performance against Arsenal and Tottenham away in the Premier League, and seen us play some fantastic attacking football. But they have also seen the side slowly but surely fall apart with players off form, getting caught out of position and arguing with each other in the changing room and last night, on the pitch.

The absence of John Terry and Frank Lampard hasn't helped and in recent weeks the departure of Didier Drogba to China has hurt us up front as once again, Fernando Torres has struggled for form and confidence of late.

People are blaming Fernando Torres for Di Matteo's sacking and I believe that is unfair as you cannot pin the teams performances and results on one single player. Torres has always given his all through difficult periods and it's been obvious at times under RDM he remained frustrated.

We all know the relationship Rafa Benitez has with Torres and if he could rekindle the same to produce the same results he had with him at Liverpool, Roman Abramovich would finally see his investment pay off.

Going forward, we have a choice, we either continue with the ill feeling towards the former Liverpool manager or, we open our minds to the fact that he could come here and finally get the best out of Fernando Torres and sort out our leaky defence.

If Rafa Benitez comes in and turns things around at Chelsea, in time he could win the fans over. The problem is "IF" is an uncertain word in Chelsea's uncertain future.
