Arsenal boss Wenger wants Premier League overhaul including January start

Arsene Wenger has called for a radical change to the structure of the Premier League, with the Arsenal manager suggesting that, among other alterations, the season should begin in January rather than the traditional August, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Wenger’s revised season would see the campaign stretch to November, providing the winter break that he and a number of other top flight managers so desire. The Telegraph adds that a winter break is being considered by the Premier League, and is wanted by Wenger, and his counterparts at England, Manchester United and Manchester City, Roy Hodgson, Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini.

The Gunners boss pointed to his experience working in Japan, where the league runs along similar lines, and also the organisation of leagues in China and the United States as evidence that a January-November calendar could be implemented.

Acknowledging that such a timetable would be alien to English football, Wenger said: “I understand it looks completely strange as people have been educated the current way but I moved to Japan and the season was in January to November. We started training in January and after a while it was completely normal.

He added: “The period of rest would be the same. It wouldn’t change the number of games. You would not be confronted with these situations when players are playing in two different championships. You would play during the summer period in the best period for football to be played.
