Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of Queens Park Rangers as the London club lie bottom of the Premier League, the BBC has reported.

Rangers meet Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday but the R’s board has moved to change the manager ahead of that match, terminating the contract of the former Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Fulham boss.

Hughes was appointed in January 2012 in place of Neil Warnock and took QPR to safety in their first season back in the Premier League. The Loftus Road side stayed up on the final day of the season despite suffering defeat to Hughes’ former side City, who also clinched the title by virtue of their 3-2 victory.

QPR were active in the transfer market throughout pre-season, signing Park Ji-Sung from Manchester United and Jose Bosingwa from Chelsea, amongst others, but the new arrivals did not translate to an upturn in form.

After 12 games of the season QPR remain without a win, four points adrift at the bottom of the table and five short of safety. Hughes’ assistant Mark Bowen and coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have been put in temporary charge.

A QPR statement read: “The circumstances we find ourselves in have left the Board of Directors with very little choice but to make a change. The Board will now be working actively to put a new managerial structure in place as soon as possible.
