Wenger asks for realism from Arsenal critics

Arsene Wenger has asked that those who have criticised his recent record at Arsenal be a little more realistic in their demands of the club, insisting that challenging for a place in the top four of the Premier League is the summit of their capabilities, the Guardian has reported.

Arsene Wenger

Wenger was the subject of critical songs during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, and was also targeted by booing from disgruntled supporters. The Gunners are currently sixth in the league table but would go above their Wednesday opponents, Everton, with a win at Goodison Park.

Arsenal finished third last season, making a late surge up the table to surpass Tottenham Hotspur and end the campaign in the Champions League qualification places, but a challenge for the title evaded the Emirates Stadium side - they were 19 points adrift of Manchester City and Manchester United, who finished second and first respectively.

Wenger however feels that a third-place finish is a fair representation of where his team currently stands. He said: “Honestly I don't think there was much more in that team than third. Like when we won the Premier League with zero defeats, which never anybody else has done, you think there is not much room to do much better. At the end of the season I want to stand in front of my mirror and think: 'Have I done all I can?' That's all.
