Rodgers feels that Liverpool deserved penalty in Tottenham defeat

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that his side were unlucky to be denied a penalty in the Reds’ 2-1 defeat at Tottenham after incidents involving skipper Steven Gerrard and striker Luis Suarez were ignored by the referee Phil Dowd.

The Merseysiders had been on an eight-match unbeaten run to recover from their poor start to the season but goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon ensured that Liverpool returned from White Hart Lane pointless for the fifth consecutive season.

However, according to the Daily Telegraph, Rodgers pointed to the failure of the referee to act on the two penalty incidents as a potential turning point.

Gerrard’s was nearly assault, how was that not a penalty?” the Northern Irishman asked. “Second one, Suarez spins and William Gallas swings his left foot and he goes down.

We know we need to be more clinical but to arrive at this stage of the season and not have had a penalty - I don’t know what the players have to do.

It’ll rack up the points and I hear people and pundits say it evens itself out over the season - so the second half of the season we’re going to get a lot of decisions.

Despite the defeat, Rodgers was reasonably happy with his side’s performance on the night. He said: “The performance level and our tempo and rhythm were relentless. If we keep playing like that, we'll climb up the table.

Liverpool next play relegation-threatened Southampton at Anfield on Saturday before travelling to Italy to play Udinese in their final Europa League Group A clash.
