LA Galaxy want Kaka over Lampard to replace Beckham

Frank Lampard appears unlikely to be the one to replace David Beckham at LA Galaxy as the MLS club have instead turned their attention to Real Madrid forward Kaka, the Daily Mail has reported.

Frank Lampard

Beckham’s six years in Los Angeles comes to an end this weekend as Galaxy meet Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup final, to be played by happy co-incidence at Galaxy’s own stadium. But the club’s relationship with Real Madrid, established in part via former Madrid midfielder Beckham, could be a factor in the club favouring Kaka over Lampard.

Also working against the Chelsea vice-captain is the preference of signing a Hispanic player to appeal to the local fan base, according to Tim Leiweke, the president of the company which owns the Galaxy.

Leiweke revealed that Galaxy have held talks with Lampard, who will be out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer, and while Leiweke is a fan of the England international, he also feels the club need to consider the identity of the area in which they are based.

I’m a huge Frank Lampard fan, and I personally have great respect for him,” Leiweike told Sports Illustrated. “I’ve gotten to spend some time with him, and he’s an unbelievably good guy. But is he the right fit for our team now for what we need?

This next person has to be able to not only fit what [Bruce Arena, Galaxy coach] needs on the pitch, but more importantly, we’re an ever-changing demographic in this marketplace, and we have to pay attention to that.

Leiweke added that Kaka wants to play in the MLS, and the Galaxy have made contact with the former Milan player with regards to a future move to the club.
