Brendan Rodgers still hopes to take Liverpool into the top four of the Premier League and with it next season’s Champions League, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Liverpool are currently 12th in the table, eight places and 10 points adrift of West Bromwich Albion, who - under former Liverpool assistant manager Steve Clarke - occupy the final Champions League qualification place.

Rodgers admitted that finishing in the Champions League places from the team’s current position is a hard prospect to envisage, but insisted that based on what he has so far seen of the side he joined in the summer, he believes it is something that can be achieved.

The Northern Irishman added that January will be a crucial month with regards to Liverpool’s ambitions this season, as he hopes to bring in the players to turn Liverpool’s possession into points by being more clinical in front of goal.

Rodgers said: “Let’s be honest, it is a big ask to make the top four, a massive ask. But that has to be our target. I have seen enough from this team to make me believe we are still on track.

Our objective in the first six months was to hang onto the coat tails of the top teams and give ourselves a fighting chance, and with sides all taking points off each other, we are still hanging in there.

We are creating enough ¬pressure and getting enough of the ball. We just need to be a bit more clinical to finish off that good work, and if we can find the right profile of players in January, we can go on a great run.
