Liverpool v Southampton - Match preview and team news
Saturday 01 December 2012
Liverpool will look to bounce back from their first defeat in eight Premier League matches at Tottenham in midweek by securing three points against newly-promoted Southampton.
Brendan Rodgers’ men have improved vastly at Anfield in recent weeks and with Luis Suarez in sensational form at the moment, will be confident of securing victory against the Premier League’s most porous defence.
Rodgers sees Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva return to the matchday squad after being missing since the second week of the season with a thigh injury. The holding midfielder’s return is being lauded as one that could help take the shackles off of Joe Allen and particularly Steven Gerrard, who has come into criticism of late after only scoring two goals so far this season. Elsewhere, Jose Enrique looks set to continue in the left-midfield position after impressing there in recent weeks, while Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly remain injured.
Southampton have the luxury of calling upon nearly a fully-fit squad as they look to continue their four-match unbeaten run in the Premier League that saw them briefly rise out of the relegation zone before Aston Villa’s win over Reading in this week condemned Nigel Adkins’ men back into 18th position.
Adkins must decide whether to continue with Paulo Gazzaniga in goal after the goalkeeper made an error to gift Norwich a point a midweek. Kelvin Davis and Artur Boruc, two keepers who have already played for the Saints in the Premier League so far this season, are vying for recalls. Elsewhere, Rickie Lambert looks set to continue up front against his boyhood club, flanked by the in-form pair of Jason Puncheon and Gaston Ramirez, a reported Liverpool transfer target in the summer before eventually joining Southampton.
