Abramovich to turn to Grant to boost Chelsea fortunes

Roman Abramovich could appoint former Chelsea manager Avram Grant as an adviser to interim manager Rafael Benitez as the Russian begins to worry he made a mistake bringing in the former Liverpool boss to replace Roberto Di Matteo, the Daily Mail has reported.

Chelsea have yet to win under Benitez, recording two goalless draws - against Manchester City and Fulham, both at home - and losing 3-1 to West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday. The supporters’ opposition to Benitez has not died down either, with the Spaniard as unpopular now as he was when the decision was first announced, leading Abramovich to seek a solution before matters deteriorate any further.

The Mail claims Abramovich raised the idea of a return for Grant, who was sacked after losing the 2008 Champions League final, with his senior confidants following the defeat by West Ham. Grant and Benitez are said to be on good terms, the newspaper adds, which leads Abramovich to believe they could work together.

Grant also managed West Ham and Portsmouth during his time in English football, and is currently without a club after leaving Partizan Belgrade. As well as reaching the Champions League final with Chelsea, Grant, who replaced Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, led Chelsea to a second-place finish in the Premier League.
