We let ourselves down, admits Man City goalkeeper Hart

Joe Hart has pulled few punches in assessing Manchester City’s dismal Champions League performance, admitting the Premier League champions have been vastly disappointing as they exit Europe altogether without winning a single game, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Joe Hart

City needed to beat Borussia Dortmund - already through as group winners - and hope for a favourable result between Real Madrid and Ajax to qualify for the consolation prize of the Europa League, but a 1-0 defeat against the Bundesliga side meant that even that was beyond them.

It is the second successive year City have been eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage, although last season Roberto Mancini’s side did at least finish third in their group, thus qualifying for the Europa League.

England international Hart offered no excuses for City’s elimination, despite his side being drawn in one of the toughest possible groups. All four teams were the reigning champions of their respective leagues and each of City’s opponents past European Cup winners.

Hart said: “ Of course we've let ourselves down, because we haven't even got in the

Europa League. I don't know why. I'd love to answer it.

We need to address it though. There was a hunger to win and if that meant Europa League, than great. But we've got bigger issues than that.

We were up against a weakened team and we had to win. We should be fighting to go through to the last 16 on the last day of the group stage and we've only got ourselves to blame that we're not.
