Juventus result cost us, laments Chelsea goalkeeper Cech

Petr Cech has been left to rue the result he believes cost Chelsea their participation in the Champions League, the home draw with Juventus, Sky Sports has reported.

Petr Cech

Chelsea on Wednesday became the first holders of the Champions League to be knocked out at the group stage, finishing third behind Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus despite a 6-1 mauling of Danish outfit Nordsjaelland. At the same time Juve beat Shakhtar 1-0 to confirm their position as group winners but if Chelsea were to have any chance of progressing, not only did they need to beat Nordsjaelland, but they were reliant on Shakhtar beating Juventus.

Cech however did not blame Shakhtar for their defeat in Turin, instead pointing the finger directly at himself and his teammates, crediting poor results earlier in the group stage as the reason Chelsea will now be competing in the Europa League after Christmas.

The goalkeeper had one particular game in mind - the 2-2 draw with the Italian champions at Stamford Bridge in September. A brace from Oscar put Chelsea in front in little more than half an hour but goals from Arturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella restored parity.

Cech said: “You have results where we lost away to Donetsk and Juventus but I think the main difference was the draw against Juve at home. We were 2-0 up and then ended 2-2. If you drop too many points in the group then you can't go through.
